1. Assault in Alta Bates Parking Area off Webster between Telegraph and Halcyon

At a little after 4 p.m., our neighbor Matthew was out enjoying the
afternoon and teaching his young daughter how to ride her bike when he
was attacked by a man wielding a sticklike object, who struck him hard
on the head. This was witnessed by some Whole Foods workers across the
street, one of whom chased the assailant, who got away.

Description of assailant: White male, twenties or thirties,
approximately 5' 11", slight build, brown hair, bearded; he approached
Matthew and his daughter aggressively, saying crazed, nonsensical
things and attacked without warning. The police took a report and
paramedics treated Matthew and took him to the emergency room. He was
injured but will be okay, and of course he and his family have been
traumatized by this assault. Please send healing thoughts the way of
Matthew and Jody and their children, Elsa and Keiran.

At times like these, it's even more important than ever that we pull
together as a neighborhood and look out for one another. Again, please
do not hesitate to call the police if you notice someone suspicious or
behaving inappropriately. It never hurts to have them check it out.
Use 911 for emergencies and 981-5900 for nonemergency calls.
