1. Crime Watch Report: Reckless Driving on Prince, Wheeler, and Woolsey Endangers Pedestrians, Damages Cars
2. Kitchen Democracy's Latest: Vote on Fire Station Closures; Select the Next Issue

Those of you who have been receiving the HNA E-Newsletter for some time know that it generally comes out no more than once every week or two, when enough news has accumulated, except in instances where a crime-watch report comes in sooner or when there's a special HNA-sponsored event that calls for a reminder. I try my best to make sure that your in-box doesn't get overly cluttered with messages, but every now and then you'll receive a second newsletter in one week. Since the report in Item 1 may draw forth someone who can describe the car involved, time seemed of the essence. So thanks for understanding why this edition of the newsletter follows so closely on the heels of the last!

-Nancy Carleton, HNA Co-Chair and E-Newsletter Editor

1. Crime Watch Report: Reckless Driving on Prince, Wheeler, and Woolsey Endangers Pedestrians, Damages Cars

A resident on Wheeler Street reports:

"I'm writing to report that on Monday night around 11:30 p.m. a white older compact/sports car came tearing around the corner of Prince and Wheeler, skipping onto the sidewalk almost hitting two pedestrians, hit at least two parked cars on Wheeler, skipped the curb into landscaped island at Wheeler and Woolsey, hit the curb on the other side of the street, and sped away. They may have hit more cars on their way down Woolsey; it's unclear. A police officer happened to be in the area, so the neighbors and the two pedestrians flagged the officer down. The pedestrians/witnesses reported that the officer "did not seem interested in [their] description of the car etc.," but they certainly did take a report. (The seeming lack of interest could have been because the witnesses' descriptions were not thorough enough, but I found that surprising, nonetheless.) If anyone else in the neighborhood saw a car fitting that description driving recklessly Monday night (or had a white car stolen last night?), I'd encourage them to contact the Berkeley Police Department [981-5900], and also let the HNA E-Newsletter list know."

2. Kitchen Democracy's Latest: Vote on Fire Station Closures; Select the Next Issue

The next Kitchen Democracy Issue is now being voted on by Berkeley neighborss:

Should the City Council allocate funding to stop rotating fire station closures in Berkeley?

On February 13, the City Council could allocate funds to end those closures.  Is this a prudent allocation of city resources?   Go to: http://www.KitchenDemocracy.org/25
Read the article and your neighbors' comments, then vote and tell City Council what you think.

***Other Berkeley News from Kitchen Democracy***

***Next Rating Period Ends Feb. 21

Our next issue to open for voting will be announced soon after Feb. 21.  Go to
http://www.KitchenDemocracy.org/berkeley/proposed

to see the current list of proposed issues, and help select the next one to open.

***Propose an issue by Feb. 18

Want to see your own issue on the list?  Send it in by Feb. 18, and hundreds of Berkeley residents will take a look at your proposal.  If they think it's worthy of a vote, you're up next.  And if not, many will share their suggestions with you, so you will get great feedback on how to improve your issue proposals in the future. Email us your yes/no question and your summary, which should also end with a question.  If your yes/no question is less than 115 characters (approx. 18 words) and your summary less than 550 characters (approx. 89 words), we'll put it on the proposed issue list.  If you want, you can also send in a balanced article (no max length) and we'll post that, too.

Regards
Robert and Simona
