1. Crime Watch Alert: Attempted Burglary on Webster at Halcyon

Account of burglary attempt on Webster at Halcyon Court, Thursday 24
November, approximately 7 p.m.:

"The guy jumped over our fence in the yard and found a shovel. He
then pried the double hung window to our kitchen window, breaking the
lip of the lock. The window was not alarmed but he proceeded to
trigger the dinning room motion detector. He then fled out the window
he entered from. Nothing was taken. I have learned of another robbery
that has happened in the last couple of weeks. One of the units
across the street from our house was burglarized recently. Also a
brick was put through a window of a car that was parked behind some
units on Webster.

My wife remembers seeing a suspicious person she thought was casing
our house a week ago. He was a short African American in a suit with a
clipboard. My wife found him in our gated area to the back unit (the
same place where the thief entered our property). She walked by and
he pretended to be talking to tenants of the units, but since we do
not rent the back house we knew he was either crazy (talking to
himself) or pretending to talk to someone. Our neighbors across the
street (cannot remember their names) have also seen this guy and
thought that he seems suspicious.

Have you heard of the anonymous tip line: 510-the-cops? People can
report suspicious activity on this line and the operator will send out
a patrol car. We have called these guys before about drug dealing."

2. Crime Watch Alert: Assault on Fulton in LeConte

Account of assault on Fulton Street (near Blake)
forwarded from LeConte Neighborhood Assn. Listserve:

"An assault on older gentlemen occurred about 11:45 a.m. Sunday
morning, Nov. 27th, in front of 2800 Fulton St.

A local person (perhaps mentally ill) who is often in this
neighborhood going through trash cans threatened, then jumped on this
older man after the man questioned him about what he was doing
breaking up or banging around a TV in the refuse can in front of the
house.

The person committing the assault meets the following description:
White male, about 6' 2" with dark complexion, possibly Italian
descent. He used to have long curly dark brown hair (about 10" or
so), but recently shaved his head clean. During warm weather he has
been seen wearing baggy black basketball shorts and top and big
shoes. Today he was wearing a huge navy blue hooded down jacket. His
recent passion has been collecting scrap wood from the trash and he is
sometimes observed talking to himself.

I'm sure anyone that regularly does yard work has seen this guy many
times. He is always wearing very distinctive clothing. Someone may
actually know who he is. He left the area going east up Blake toward
Telegraph and was not found by police. The man who was assaulted would
like this person picked up for psychiatric evaluation. If you know
who this person is, you should contact Officer Waite, Badge #20, who
took the report. If you see this person trespassing on your property,
you should report it to the Berkeley Police, 981-5900, and probably
not confront him as he may be easily provoked."

1. Crime Watch Alert: Attempted Burglary on Halcyon

Account of burglary attempt on the west side of Halcyon Court early
Monday morning :

"At about 5 we heard a commotion and scared off the would-be burglar.
A window in our dining room was open about 4 inches, which is all it
would go since we have little nobs that prevent the windows from
opening all the way. Didn't get a description and the person may have
split in a car. I heard a car speed off, but didn't see if it was
parked or anything.
We keep our computers in the dining room, which has no curtains. That
will soon change, I think, as well as not leaving our laptop in the
open again.

When we made our police report, the officer said, as you noted in
previous emails, that folks are working our hood."

2. Crime Watch Alert: Suspicious Man Casing Halcyon?

A day and a half before the attempted burglary on the west side of
Halcyon, the next-door neighbor encountered someone at the end of the
deep driveway opposite the window that the burglar used to attempt to
gain entry. She now suspects he may have been casing the properties.
His description: African-American male with gold tooth, a bit stocky
and on the short side (under 5'7" or a bit shorter). He seemed to be
early middle age, and perhaps bald or balding. (He disappeared quickly
when she gave him an unfriendly reception.)

3. Drug Use in Halcyon Commons Park

Neighbors in the apartment building at Halcyon and Prince reported
that they have witnessed drug use in Halcyon Commons Park recently.
They have reported this to the Police. (Please report any such
incidents when observed; the more the Police hear from us, the more
proactive they will be. It's important that we set a clear boundary
that our neighborhood will not tolerate this behavior.)
