Editor's Introductory Note:

Given the bad news about armed robberies over the past month and a half, it seems important to pass some good news (see item 1) on promptly. As the police at our neighborhood potluck said, what seems like a wave of armed robberies may involve only a few perpetrators. With this latest arrest combined with the arrests noted earlier, at least two armed robbers and two accomplices are off the street thanks to good work on the parts of the Berkeley and Oakland police departments as well as the bravery and prompt action of the Bateman neighbors who apprehended one of them. While that doesn't mean we should let down our guard, it's good news nevertheless.

And a reminder: Please update your address books to reflect the new email for sending in crime watch reports as well as good news: Nancy Carleton/Halcyon Neighborhood Association <halcyon92@gmail.com>.

1. Crime Watch Report: Second Suspect in Woolsey/Benvenue Robbery (and Other Berkeley/No. Oakland Robberies) Arrested

The following information was received (originating in the Colby Park Watch group's listserve):

The Woolsey arrest last Saturday led to the capture of the accomplice, who was responsible for many armed robberies!

OAKLAND - A man who is suspected in a dozen street robberies in West and North Oakland and Berkeley that involved a mugger who usually wore a camouflage jacket and put a gun to his victims' heads was arrested Thursday, police said. The suspect, Marvin M. Johnson, 21, was arrested about 12:05 p.m. as he approached his car parked outside his apartment in the 1100 block of Eighth Street in West Oakland.

Police found the distinctive camouflage jacket inside the car he was about to get into and other evidence linking him to the robberies was found in the apartment, investigators said.

Oakland Sgt. Drennon Lindsey said the spree started in May, with the latest robberies attributed to Johnson happening Saturday and Sunday in Berkeley and Oakland.

She said he usually would target women in their 30s to 60s walking by themselves in the morning and early evening.

He would approach them from behind, put a gun to their heads and take their purses, she said, sometimes threatening to kill them if they resisted.

Even though he was always seen on foot, police believe he had a car parked nearby, possibly with a getaway driver waiting for him.

Police said in the most recent cases the suspect robbed a 62-year-old woman in the 900 block of MacArthur Boulevard about 11:10 a.m. Sunday after robbing a 33-year-old woman in the 400 block of 38th Street an hour earlier.

It was at a robbery on [Woolsey and] Benvenue Street in Berkeley that police developed information that led to Johnson's arrest. They were able to learn what kind of car he owned and were able to trace the vehicle to the Eighth Street address.

Oakland Sgt. Randy Bandino said Oakland undercover Officer Jeffhry Cid started watching the car Thursday morning while officers from other units - including patrol, Targeted Enforcement Task Force and a Crime Reduction Team - waited nearby.

When Johnson started walking to the car about 12:05 p.m. Cid alerted the other officers who swooped in and arrested him. Some people with Johnson were being detained for questioning, police said.

[Editor's Note: According to additional information received, the earlier man who was arrested near the scene of the Woolsey/Benvenue robbery after being apprehended by neighbors who held him until the police got there was named Ronald Chastang, born in 1986.]

3. Crime Watch Report: Neighbor Harassed on Telegraph Avenue/ Drug Use on Ashby Avenue

An Emerson Street neighbor reports:

I was walking our dog at about 6:15 this morning on Telegraph, and this guy was walking on the sidewalk coming towards us. I thought he would just pass us, but instead when he got close he tried to grab my arm and said something profane. My dog  started to react to the guy, but I kept feeding him treats to keep him heeling next to me. We quickly walked around the corner, and I saw a normal guy putting stuff into his car and a guy on a bike had slowed down because he saw the other guy try to grab me and wanted to help. The crazy guy started to follow us around the corner, but as we got closer to the guy at his car and the biker got closer he walked away. I told the other people the guy was acting strange and my dog and I walked away. On our way home, I saw a guy leaning against the front door of the apartment building at 2180 Ashby shooting up on the front porch of an apartment building. So, I decided to call the nonemergency line for the police to report both incidents.  They were pretty concerned so they  sent out two officers to the house to get a description and what not. I was very impressed with the seriousness with which the police handled the situation and their quick response time.

[Editor's Note: The call to the police was very important in setting our neighborhood's boundary. Please keep both the nonemergency number and the emergency number programmed into your cellphone and/or memory, and do not hesitate to call to report threatening or suspicious behvaior. See the Useful Contact Information at the end of each E-News for the numbers.]

Editor's Introductory Note:

Just a reminder to pass on information related to crime watch reports to the HNA E-News so I can disseminate it quickly to over 325 households in our immediate area (the information about the Deakin Street robbery is older than I'd like because I didn't receive full details until last night). If I'm out of town, I will do my best to arrange for backup monitoring of the new HNA email address listed below (see item 1). Neighbors are also encouraged to take the initiative to post information about robberies or other crimes around the neighborhood, so we can inform as many people as possible of the details, including suspect descriptions. From this point onward, please email your crime watch reports to Nancy Carleton <halcyon92@gmail.com>.

It's also important to balance the bad news with the good, and HNA offers many positive opportunities for community building, so please also pass on news you'd like to share with neighbors concerning births, new jobs, services you offer, etc. I will post them in an upcoming E-News. And by the way, our community potluck last Sunday was very enjoyable (thank you Jessica and David for sharing your yard and inviting the police, and special appreciation to Tory for organizing this and other potlucks). Over 40 people had a good time socializing and eating good food  in addition to getting a long opportunity to talk with Beat Coordinator Stephen Burcham and Beat Officer Bartalini as well as District 7 Councilmember Kriss Worthington. Thanks, all!

3. Added Details Robbery on Woolsey in the Bateman Neighborhood a Week Ago; One of Two Suspects Apprehended

The following update on the armed robbery described a week ago was received from the Bateman neighborhood:

A Korean woman and her mother were robbed. This is the same incident originally described in an E-News article a week ago, but the initial report had the wrong time of day and cross street. Fortunately the police have one suspect in custody and perhaps he will lead them to the second.  Prompt action by the neighbors has helped the police catch one suspect and now that is one less person likely to commit crimes in our neighborhood.  It shows what can be done if we all stay vigilant and aware of what is going on around us.  My hat is off to those involved!

-Trevor Laws [president of Bateman Neighborhood Association]

This morning just before 11:00 a.m. we witnessed a mugging/robbery (possibly armed) on Woolsey a few feet east of
Benvenue. Two women were attacked by two young black men. We ran into a nearby house where we called 911 and told them what was going on. By the time the police arrived, two other witnesses had chased the muggers and managed to hold one of them. The other one got away. We gave  report to the police.

And the initial report HNA received of this incident (which had the time of day and cross street wrong):

Robbery, Saturday, June 23rd.

One of my neighbors on Prince was walking with her mom on Woolsey and Bateman [correction: Benvenue], was accosted by two men, one of whom was apprehended by the cops (the other one got away, but they'll probably be able to get the one in custody to flip).  They took the keys to her house, and she was locked out.  Ofc. Bartalini, who was at the [Bateman] meeting with us the other night, paid out of his pocket for new locks and new keys for her.  Meanwhile, though, her mother was knocked to the ground and suffered some kind of trauma to the head.

Ofc. told me that it happened on Woolsey [near the] same place as the last robbery. I don't know much else, but he also told me the perpetrator of the most recent robbery on Woolsey and Bateman (where another neighbor was held at gunpoint and approached from the rear) has been apprehended and is also in custody.

The only suspect description I have is a black adult male (i.e., over 18), nothing more precise than that in terms of age or complexion.  Tall, about 6'2", thin, short hair, wearing camouflage jacket.   That seems to be the daytime choice of apparel for armed robbery these days!!!  No mention of a car. I think if we're out walking during the day on Woolsey, at least for a while till things calm down, we should try to go in groups - more than two, as in this case there were two women who were assaulted.  Seems women are these guy's targets - couples at night, women during the day.

5. Halcyon Safety "Dog" Walks: Sign Up for the Yahoo Group/Listserve

Now that we've started walking again, HNA Neighborhood Watch Coordinator Dawn Rubin is in the process of creating a Yahoo Group to allow us to communicate with one another easily so we can all share in the planning of  scheduled walks (which could take place during the midday as well as at night), as well as suggest spontaneous or impromptu walks and find out quickly if at least three or four people are available. This Yahoo Group is focused  on scheduling walks to keep our eyes on the neighborhood while we build community and get to know one another, so we'll all try to stick close to that theme so no one's in-box gets flooded with extraneous or off-topic emails (as with any Yahoo group, you can choose to receive the emails in the form of daily or weekly digests if that works best for you).  This will be a by-invitation group only; if you'd like to participate, please contact Dawn Rubin at  <familyrubin@comcast.net>, and be sure to provide your full name, your email, your address, and your phone number for verification purposes (for our safety, we all need to know who we're walking with).

Here's Dawn Rubin's description of the purposes of the Halcyon Walks, in case you missed it earlier: We've started the group "dog" walks around the neighborhood again over the past several weeks. We generally meet in the evening to walk, talk, and get to know one another, catch up on news, and see what's going on all over Halcyon neighborhood (from Telegraph to Adeline, and from Woolsey to Ashby). The walks build community and let everyone in our neighborhood know that we care about what goes on here. We'll greet everyone we see, going out of our way to say hello to people we don't yet know. With youth, we will be particularly aware of the fact that these are "our kids" and our future  -  it's up to us to look after them in a loving way to help them make wise choices. We follow some general guidelines for safety. Fewer than three people may not be safe, so we only start if there are at least three or four people who've committed.  Under no circumstances will we do anything that would endanger us or anyone else.  We always have a cell phone with us, in case something needs to be reported, and we notify the beat officer beforehand so the police know we're out there. People bring dogs if they have them (for fun, dog exercise, and safety), but NO DOG IS REQUIRED. Come join us!

6. Bus Rapid Transit on Telegraph: Comments on EIR Due by Tuesday, July 3

Editor's Note: While Halcyon Neighborhood Association does not take positions on controversial issues except in rare instances where there is near unanimity among neighbors, we do encourage neighbors to inform themselves and take action where they feel strongly. Proposed changes to Telegraph Avenue could have a profound impact on our neighborhood whether for good or bad (see the Berkeley Daily Planet website at http://www.berkeleydailyplanet.com and search BRT for commentaries pro and con). An Environmental Impact Report has been released, and there are just a few days left to submit comments:

AC Transit and the Federal Transit Authority have released the Draft Environmental Impact Report for Bus Rapid Transit in the East Bay (http://www.actransit.org/news/articledetail.wu?articleid=42622c20&PHPSESSID=943e42ff8d0d244657dfa99b6571e9c1#online). The project proposes to implement transit-only lanes on Telegraph Ave. in order to increase the speed and on time rate of buses between Berkeley and downtown Oakland. The Draft EIR describes the potential environmental impacts of the proposed alternatives and a no action alternative.

This is the opportunity for South Berkeley residents to voice their opinions about the Bus Rapid Transit system. You can submit comments for or against the project,  or ask for specific mitigations to the expected negative impacts. All comments must be received by July 3, 2007

New robbery, today, Saturday, June 23rd, not long ago (it's 4:30 p.m. almost as I write).

3. Keep Your Lights On!

A Webster Street neighbor writes:

One other thing that the police mentioned in the meeting a few months ago was lighting the side walk in front of homes.  According to Berkeley PD, this significantly decreased crime in lit areas (crimes move to more dimly lit areas).   We have installed energy-efficient flood lights and keep the front porch light on during the night (officer says this helps greatly with responding to calls and drive-bys.  Anywa,s it would be great to see more lighting in our neighborhood.

* City of Berkeley: Useful Contact Information

Editor's Introductory Note:

While the recent series of armed robberies in our neighborhood and nearby neighborhoods is alarming, there are things we can all do to help prevent crime - or at least reduce the number of incidents. One of the most important is an act mentioned many times in this newsletter: Call the police immediately if you notice anything or anyone suspicious. Call the nonemergency number to ask for the police to drive by and check it out, or call the emergency number if a crime is in progress (see numbers under the Useful Contact Information placeholder at the end of each E-News). Already the obvious upswing in drug activity in Halcyon Commons park (as reported in past E-Newsletters) has been reduced dramatically by several of us taking the responsibility to call and report each suspected incident. The more we cultivate a culture of personal responsibility, the better we'll be able to do our part as a neighborhood in partnering with the police and city government to reduce crime.

Another action you can take is to get to know your neighbors; over time, knowing one another better will help us know who is part of the neighborhood and who isn't. In this way, it will be easier to tune into the "anyone suspicious" part of the prior recommendation and keep a friendly but watchful eye open. A fun opportunity to do this is this Sunday's community potluck (see item 2), which will also be attended by Councilmember Kriss Worthington and possibly a beat officer in response to neighborhood concerns about violent crime. And if you can't make the potluck this Sunday, there will be a couple of opportunities to get to know your neighbors in August, including the National Night Out Against Crime on August 7, which HNA will be participating in with a potluck in Halcyon Commons park followed by a walk through the larger neighborhood. See the For Your Calendar placeholder at the end of the HNA E-News and set aside some of the dates in your calendar now!

Finally, while Halcyon Neighborhood Association steers clear of getting involved in the sometimes contentious Berkeley political process, we have always done our best to pass on information so individual citizens can take action. The Useful Contact Information placeholder at the end of each E-News makes it easy for you to email your councilmember or the entire City Council to express your concerns and share your ideas. Just a reminder: The City budget for the next fiscal year will be voted on at next Tuesday's Council meeting. If you have opinions about how the Council can best prioritize its resources, now's the time to email them with your two cents.

And don't forget to water your street trees this summer (see item 2)!

-Nancy Carleton, HNA Co-Chair and E-Newsletter Editor

1. Halcyon Community Potluck, Sunday, June 24, 6-8 p.m., 2116 Emerson (Councilmember Worthington Attending & Police Invited)

Halcyon Community Potluck Sunday, June 24, 6-8 p.m.
at the home of Jessica and David
2116 Emerson (between Wheeler & Shattuck, two blocks north of Prince)

Editor's Note: District 7 Councilmember Kriss Worthington will attend the latter part of the event to address concerns about recent armed robberies in the neighborhood and nearby, and the Community Services Bureau of the Police Department has asked our beat officer to stop by for half an hour (the beat officer's presence will depend in part on what calls are coming in that evening on the beat).

The potluck offers a chance to socialize and share neighborhood news. Please bring a potluck item to share. If so inspired, it's really helpful if you can also bring a beverage to share. Children welcome.

Potluck suggestions: Appetizer: A-F k Main Dish: G-N k Salad: T-Z k Dessert: O-S
(If not obvious, kindly attach a label with ingredients for your dish to alert those with vegetarian and other diets.)

2. Street Trees Need Summer Watering! (especially those planted in past couple of years)

A Prince Street neighbors sends the following reminder:

I noticed that some of the trees planted in the last couple of years appear to be in dire stress. In particular, I noticed on Monday or Tuesday as I drove by that the trees in the Fulton/Prince Street area are in trouble.

Hardwoods like maple and sycamore require two to four years to establish themselves in our climate. Until then they need summer watering.  [Editor's Note: And even older trees thrive better when they receive occasional watering during the dry summer months.] I am sure that many people don't know, and assume the trees are now independent.

Notorious "tree-lover,"
Bruce

Editor's Note: Some trees have folks who agreed to water them when planted; others have relied on nearby volunteers; absentee or less-concerned property owners mean that not all trees have responsible adoptive parents. If you have a relatively new tree near or in front of your dwelling, please help out by watering it regularly. And if you see a tree that's obviously thirsty, please make a point of speaking to the nearby home or apartment dweller -- and offer to help with the watering if that's needed. If you're unable to make contact, please take it upon yourself to bring a few gallons by on a regular basis. Although we're in a drought year, and slow drip watering is the most effective, any water is better than none. We stand to lose some of our newest trees if we as a neighborhood don't take collective responsibility for their well-being.

As members of the fire service, we all know to well what the ultimate sacrifice means. But it is always difficult when we are actually faced with loosing a member of our family, this morning, we lost nine. These brothers gave their lives as firefighters were caught in a roof collapse during a sofa warehouse fire in Charleston, South Carolina. The Berkeley Fire Fighters Association will be sending a donation and representatives from our organization to support the family and friends of the following members who gave their lives:

Captain William "Billy" Hutchinson, 48;

Captain Theodore M. "Mike" Benke, 49;

Captain Louis Mulkey, 34;

Engineer Mark Kelsey, 40;

Engineer Rodney Bradford "Brad" Baity, 37;

Assistant Engineer Michael French, 27;

Fire fighter James "Earl" Drayton, 56;

Fire fighter Brandon Thompson, 27; and

Fire fighter Melven Champaign, 46.

These brothers have paid the ultimate price for dedicating their lives to protecting the community. Please keep the family and friends who have been left behind in your thoughts and prayers. Donations to the families can be delivered by the Berkeley Fire Fighters Association; please reply to <info@bffa1227.org> if you wish to make a donation. 7. Useful Links to Crime Statistics

A neighbor from the East Lorin district passes on the following useful links:

I wanted to give you a reference which you may or may not already be aware of.  The Berkeley Police and Oakland Police both have websites with crime incident statistics sites which are very helpful. They give a list of incidents with details (location, date, time, type of crime). I looked that up and saw that in the last several months there have been several other robberies in our area [besides those that have been listed recently in the HNA E-News]:  the nearest to the recent incident being the robbery at Dana and Woolsey, which was on May 12, 2007.  Another robbery at Wheeler and Woolsey occurred on Feb. 10 2007.  One at College and Woolsey on Jan. 19, 2007.  Several robberies in my area west of Shattuck occurred, at least one a month, on Prince and Essex streets. The websites are:

Check those out if you want to know more.  Woolsey, College, Telegraph and Shattuck appear to be particularly popular corridors for crime.

8. Another Take on May and June Armed Robberies in the Bateman Neighborhood

Editor's Note: These are not new incidents, but this report from the Fairview Park Neighborhood Newsletter (forwarded by a neighbor) fleshes out some of the details and contains worthwhile comments:

Unfortunately on Saturday night, May 12th, at approximately 9:45 p.m., I was the victim of an armed robbery on the corner of Dana & Woolsey -
just around the corner from 66th St. And, in talking to the police and other acquaintances around, I get the impression that this is happening with increasing frequency in North Oakland/South Berkeley. The pattern seems to be: Often on Saturday night, in the evening, targeting couples who are walking around on foot, attacking from behind and in groups of two attackers. It's shaken us up a bit, but fortunately we weren't injured. It is the first incident that I've heard of in our immediate area as well. I've been walking around here late at night for the last 3 years and never really felt threatened or worried about robbery & violence. We made a full police report. Actually, as soon as it happened, there was so much noise that many, many neighbors on the corner of Woolsey and Dana came out of their houses to see what was going on. The Berkeley police were called immediately, and they were there within 5 minutes of when it happened. The support from the neighbors was incredible, and very much appreciated.
Despite what's happened, I think the people in the neighborhood are really great. . . .

ANOTHER ONE AT WOOLSEY & BATEMAN
Here's a somewhat identifiable description of an armed robber just across the Berkeley border [as reported in a previous edition of the HNA E-News]. On the 11th at 2:00 p.m. a woman with her baby in a stroller, on Woolsey at Bateman, was robbed at the point of a semiautomatic, but not assaulted. A couple of people chased the gunman but he got away into a waiting car. Estimated about 19 y.o., African American, wearing a gray jacket, with an odd speech pattern described as "somewhat robotic" possibly accented.

12. Suspect in Robberies Apprehended

A nearby neighbor reports:

Hi folks,

A recent article in the Berkeley Daily Planet talks about the capture of a possible suspect in some of our nearby robberies:
"Robbery Chase Ends in Tub"
http://www.berkeleydailyplanet.com/article.cfm?issue=06-22-07&storyID=27351

I just spoke with the Robbery division of BPD; they were somewhat noncommittal and at first just wanted me to talk to OPD as they ultimately took the suspect onto custody,but they did disclose that this guy is being charged with several robberies in Berkeley as well.  He is being charged with a recent armed robbery near College (I believe the Bateman and Woolsey one); the officer did not want to get more specific. The suspect is also being charged with several robberies in Oakland. I am not certain whether he is being charged with the Tremont Street case.

The Halcyon Neighborhood Association E-Newsletter:  The HNA E-Newsletter forwards occasional crime-watch notices as well as items of general interest to neighbors in the Ashby/Telegraph/Woolsey/Adeline area of south Berkeley (HNA's borders), including announcements about community-building potlucks, greening projects, disaster preparedness meetings, and work parties in Halcyon Commons Park. If you're receiving this email, you probably either signed up at a neighborhood event or a neighbor forwarded it to you. Please note that to prevent spam, HNA always uses bcc and does not share your email address with third parties. Another case where the importance of the information calls for a second E-News in one week. This armed robbery took place just a few blocks outside our neighborhood. Since the suspect is still at large, we all need to be vigilant.

Stay safe!

1. Crime Watch Report: Armed Robbery on Woolsey at Bateman 2 p.m. Monday, June 11

A neighbor in the nearby Bateman neighborhood reports:

My wife  was robbed at gunpoint Monday afternoon (June 11) on Woolsey at Bateman while walking with our child in the stroller. She was approached from behind, assailant had a black semi-automatic, and "asked" for her purse.  After taking the purse, he walked away.  She asked a passerby for a cell phone, and he gave chase and was soon joined by another. Neither caught up with the assailant; he jumped into a waiting car and wasn't caught. Nobody was hurt, and our child slept through  it all. One neighbor did report a suspicious car in the neighborhood, but I don't have the description.

Assailant was about 19 years old, African American, dark skin, with a chipped front tooth, or some kind of dental issue in front teeth.  Wearing a gray camouflage jacket.  Spoke strangely, with possibly an African accent, somewhat "robot like."

FYI, if anyone has used a cell phone for 911, it goes directly to CA Highway patrol, and you are often put on hold, kind of like calling your bank.  The Berkeley Police Dept. recommends putting their nonemergency number into your speed dial to avoid this: (510) 981-5900 . [Editor's Note: Or you can also program the Berkeley emergency number for cellphones: 981-5911.]

Editor's Introductory Note:

Thanks to all who expressed concern regarding the threat  I received as described in last week's E-News. I am deeply appreciative of the support I've received by email and in person, and especially gratified as I see more neighbors spending time in Halcyon Commons in answer to HNA Co-Chair  John Steere's call for us to engage in positive uses of  our park, which will naturally drive out antisocial uses. While it's unpleasant to receive a threat, the reality is that this is a very well-organized neighborhood, and many people are involved in our efforts, even if I'm particularly visible because of leadership roles I've played over the years. If anything were to happen to me, it's clear that this would only motivate everyone else to work that much harder. You may not realize just how many people are involved: The HNA E-News now goes to over 300 households in the neighborhood -  as well as reaching dozens of public officials (from beat officers to our city councilmembers) and is also posted to an additional 100-plus households on the LeConte Neighborhood Association list. As we act together, we represent an incredibly powerful force. So keep those calls going in to the police if you notice anything suspicious. Consider joining the new night-time safety "dog" walks Yahoo group (see item 1), and come to our community-building activities when you're able (including a potluck later this month, as described in item 6, and work parties and the National Night Out Against Crime in early August, as described in the For Your Calendar placeholder at the end of the E-News). Let's keep looking out for one another and sending a clear message that we will not tolerate intimidation or violence in our neighborhood, and we will work to protect both the beautiful park we created ourselves and our larger neighborhood.

A recent article in the Chronicle (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/06/10/LVG7MQAG9B1.DTL&hw=shark+Gandhi&sn=001&sc=1000) contained an inspiring concluding paragraph: "I love the quote by Gandhi, 'Be the change that you want to see in the world,' " said Kathrein. "What it's all about, to me, is taking a look at your life and your surroundings. If you see something wrong, fix it. It's not up to anyone else to fix it; it's not someone else's responsibility. It's your job to make the world a better place for you and for everyone else."

-Nancy Carleton, HNA Co-Chair and E-Newsletter Editor

1. Night-time Safety "Dog" Walks: Sign Up for the Yahoo Group/Listserve

Many thanks to all who attended last Friday's night-time safety "dog" walk, including a number of first-time walkers. Now that we've started walking again, HNA Neighborhood Watch Coordinator Dawn Rubin is in the process of creating a Yahoo Group to allow us to communicate with one another easily so we can all share in the planning of  scheduled walks, as well as suggest spontaneous or impromptu walks and find out quickly if at least three or four people are available.

Here's Dawn Rubin's description of the purposes of the Halcyon Walks, in case you missed it in the last E-News: We've started the evening "dog" walks around the neighborhood again over the past several weeks.

2. Drilling at Whole Foods Market Tuesday-Thursday

Whole Foods Market asked us to pass on the following message:

Dear Neighbors,

The City of Berkeley has requested an outside company (Delta Consultants) to come in and collect a series of samples from the eastern side of the Whole Foods Market parking lot along Telegraph Avenue [this is in connection with the possible development of the former gas station site across Telegraph]. The work will be done between the hours of 7-10 a.m. on Tuesday 6/12, Wednesday 6/13 and Thursday 6/14. It will include the saw cutting of pavement and possible drilling equipment.

We are very sorry for any inconveniences or disturbances this may cause.If you have any questions please direct them to Mr. Roger Hoffmore at 916-719-0156

Thank you,
Whole Foods Market Berkeley

3. Yard Sales Raise Funds for Disaster Supply Cache Supplies

In addition to helping many of us clear out closets and pass our no-longer-wanted items on to others at bargain prices, the HNA Yard Sale last Saturday raised over $225 for the HNA Disaster Supply Cache Fund. These funds will go directly toward purchasing needed items to make our response to a large earthquake more effective to benefit the entire neighborhood. Thanks to all of the sellers who chose to contribute 5 to 10 percent of their proceeds to the fund, and special thanks to Susan Hunter and Nancy Carleton for donating all the proceeds of their sale to the fund (plus to Susan for organizing the event, and to those who helped her with signs and posting flyers). Thanks as well to the several neighbors who donated clean used sheets to the cache, which can be used for bandages and slings. The Yard Sale was also a great social event, giving many of us a chance to visit with our neighbors and enjoy the community we've created.

If you were a seller and haven't yet contributed, it's not too late! Drop off or mail a check to HNA Treasurer Susan Hunter, 3044-A Halcyon Court, Berkeley, CA 94705. And even if you didn't participate, you can always help round out our Disaster Supply Cache materials either with direct donation of items or with a financial contribution (see the placeholder at the end of each E-News on what's needed and how to contribute).

5. Crime Watch Alert: Burglary on Prince Street Saturday Night

A neighbor on Prince near Deakin reports:

"Around quarter after twelve on Saturday night [June 9/early morning June 10], my roommate heard heavy steps outside her window, and called the police.  When they arrived, there was a new mess and some of my items had been stolen, so there had clearly been a break-in.

A neighbor on one of the corners -  we don't yet know who it was, but do want to thank them very much if we are able to find out -  was out when the police arrived, and thanks to him the intruder was quickly apprehended. Shortly thereafter, my things were found dumped and were returned to me. Due to good evidence proving that the burglar was in the house, along with the witness, the police sounded confident that he will be convicted.

I only saw the man when the police had us look at him from across the street to verify that we didn't know him, so it isn't a great description. He looked like he was in his late 30s,maybe early 40s.  African American, medium skin tone, looked like he wasn't very tall, but I really can't guess from a distance. He had a very closely shaved haircut, possibly actually bald on top, looked like the hair that I did see was grey or salt and pepper, but again, it was a distance. He was wearing a reddish long-sleeved shirt with jeans.  The cuffs of the jeans were folded up to mid-calf - sort of dressed young for his apparent age. He was wearing a id-type badge of some sort around his neck.  The backpack they recovered was a pretty nice one, silver and black with padded shoulder straps. He was not someone I recognized from around here at all.

I hope that this information helps in some way."

Public Hearing on the Draft Environmental Impact Report

AC Transit and the Federal Transit Authority have released the Draft Environmental Impact Report for Bus Rapid Transit in the East Bay (http://www.actransit.org/news/articledetail.wu?articleid=42622c20&PHPSESSID=943e42ff8d0d244657dfa99b6571e9c1#online). If you wish to be removed from this list, please reply to HNA Co-Chair Nancy Carleton/Halcyon Neighborhood Association <ngc2@mindspring.com>. Feel free to pass the HNA E-Newsletter on to other neighbors you think might be interested.

To submit items for the newsletter:   Email unformatted content or links (no graphics or attachments) to HNA E-Newsletter Editor Nancy Carleton <ngc2@mindspring.com>. Crime-watch reports and news about neighbors is especially welcome. Please note that due to the volunteer nature of the endeavor, the E-Newsletter does not typically include "letters to the editor" or "commentary," but will gladly include links to such items written by neighbors in the Ashby/Telegraph/Woolsey/Adeline area and published elsewhere (the Berkeley Daily Planet has a large section devoted to opinion).

HNA Listserve:  If you would like to receive messages (and participate in discussions) on the HNA Listserve, please reply to Halcyon Neighborhood Association <ngc2@mindspring.com> indicating your interest, and you will receive an invitation to join. [The HNA Listserve is currently inactive but can be revived if enough neighbors show interest.]

HNA Blog:  If you would like to view previous newsletters online (and comment via a blog format, though this is a low-activity blog), please visit http://halcyoncourt.blogspot.com/
